Three among the most thrilling space telescopes are scheduled for launch by 2034.

The eagerly anticipated James Webb Space Telescope will soon be launched. However, with many other epic telescopes for astronomy planned in the coming years, the excitement is just getting started.

As 2021 comes to an end, the eyes of astronomers are focused on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) that’s scheduled to be launched in December and will be operational by the end of the month. JWST is among the most anticipated scientific instruments of all time and is expected to provide us a brand new and exciting view of the beginning of the universe as well as the atmospheres of the planets of other stars that are circling celestial bodies (see “How a James Webb telescope will rewrite the story of the universe”).

However, the JWST isn’t the conclusion of the story. In the next ten years, we will see many more groundbreaking observatories begin to be built. These are the three most thrilling possibilities.

Expected release date is 2026. This European Space Agency project will search a million stars for light specks that indicate an orbiting planet. Similar telescopes to the ones previously used were unable to observe planets near their stars and therefore pass by them often. Plato can stay close to each star longer and thus find planets further away concerning the star and have an extended orbital time. The mission’s focus is on finding signs of rock exoplanets within the habitable zone. This is the smaller region of the star system with temperatures that are ideal for water to be liquid. The mission also has the instruments to analyze these worlds giving clues about how similar to Earth they could be.

Expected launch date: 2025
